| Abstract: | The Sky That Could Not Hold Them is a short mythic shadow‑theatre narrative inspired by the ancient imagery of the Sun and Moon as siblings locked in an eternal cycle of pursuit and return. The story follows two luminous siblings with opposite roles: Sól, the bearer of dawn’s fire, and Máni, the quiet guide of the night. Tasked with illuminating a waiting world, their paths diverge across the sky as they are pursued by ancient forces of hunger and longing. Through golden dawns, silvery nights, and the dramatic moment of eclipse, the myth explores themes of separation, endurance, and cosmic balance. The storytelling combines direct speech, rhythmic narration, live sound, and shadow choreography to create a visually evocative experience that celebrates light, darkness, and the tension between them. This script, based on the Norse myth of the Sun and Moon, was conceived and written by Isabelle Gatt for a group of fifteen international teachers participating in an intensive two‑week Drama and Shadow Puppetry Workshop in Malta in 2025. The participants were English-as-an-additional-language (EAL) learners who practised English through creative drama while exploring shadow puppetry techniques in an educational context. The performance took place at Luzzu Conference Centre, Qawra, Malta, as part of the final course celebration, showcasing the participants’ creative work and demonstrating how mythic storytelling and shadow theatre can support both artistic and pedagogical outcomes.
