Abstract: This article will focus on education and social issues in general in a postcolonial context-Malta. We shall provide some brief general comments on the history and current socio-economic situation of the country. We then move on to an exploration of those concepts by Freire which, we feel, need to be 'reinvented' in the Maltese context due to their pertinence for the country's postcolonial state condition. We shall explore, in a self-reflexive section, their relevance to our understanding of the political-pedagogical implications of some 'on the ground' projects in which we are involved.
