Abstract: From 1954 to 1967, a unique "one-teacher school" operated in the remote Italian village of Barbiana, founded by the local priest, Lorenzo Milani. He saw his pastoral duty primarily as providing children from peasant families with an effective tool for equality—language proficiency and the ability to express themselves. A summary of his teaching work was the "Letter to a Teacher," co-written by him and his students—a manifesto on what a school should (and should not) be.
