Abstract: Manoel Theatre and Bank of Valletta (BOV) present the programme for the concert version of the opera "Roméo et Juliette", conducted by Michael Laus, led by Marcelline Agius, and performed by the Orkestra Nazzjonali. The opera was adapted from William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet" by librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, with music composed by Charles Gounod. The event was originally planned to be a theatrical performance of the opera, though this was changed later in production for unforeseen reasons. The performance featured the Malta Chorale, led by chorus master Lino Attard. The performance was held as part of the BOV Opera Festival 2005, on the 16th and the 18th of March, 2005, at the Manoel Theatre, in Valletta.
Description: Programme includes Manoel Theatre Management Committee, list of sponsors to the Manoel Theatre Management Committee, notes with details on performances and bookings at the Manoel Theatre, note on the history of the Manoel Theatre, foreword from BOV's chairman Roderick Chalmers with his photo, note with photo on musical director Michael Laus, list of members of the Malta Chorale, short note on composer Charles Gounod and his development of the opera "Roméo et Juliette", synopsis of each act in "Roméo et Juliette", list of cast, note of acknowledgements from Manoel Theatre's artistic director Tony Cassar Darien to the people who were initially involved in the performance when it was planned to be a theatrical opera performance, notes with photos on singers Joseph Calleja and Tatiana Lisnic, notes on singers Albert Buttigieg, Kevin Caruana, Noel Galea, Joseph Lia, Francis Mangion, Claire Massa, Massimiliano Valleggi, James Vella Bondin, Charles Vincenti and Gillian Zammit and choir master Lino Attard, note advertising the European Union programme of projects "Culture 2000", note advertising the Theatre Museum, note on BOV's support towards arts and culture, list of members of the National Orchestra, and note advertising forthcoming performances to be held as part of the BOV Opera Festival 2005. Programme also includes separate paper with essays and photos on soprano singer Leontina Vaduva and tenor singer Harri Van Der Plas, who were originally going to play Juliette and Roméo respectively in the opera, but were replaced by soprano Tatiana Lisnic and tenor Joseph Calleja in the concert version. This separate paper was likely not given alongside the programme at the time of the event. Programme is given no. 2245 in archival records. Retrieved from the Manoel theatre records.
