Abstract: The suburb of Floriana was growing rapidly and the two churches serving this community were beginning to become too small. Therefore Grandmaster Vilhena requested that a new parish be elected and the Sarria church become the new Parish Church for Floriana. The idea was rejected as the Sarria church fell under the Order's jurisdiction and it did not go down well with the Bishop of the day. It was then decided that a new Parish church is to be built. For the people of Floriana this started their long and, at times, bitter campaign to obtain the approval of the Holy See for the dismemberment of their Church from that of'St Paul Shipwrecked of Valletta. Finally in 1844, Pope Gregory XVI signed the relative Bull for the erection of the Church of St Publius to the status of a full Parish Church.
