Abstract: The Maltese Islands are located in the centre of the Mediterranean, a location that created an inextricable link between the history of the Maltese archipelago and maritime activity in the Mediterranean. Millennia of history is reflected on the archaeologically rich seabed surrounding Malta and Gozo. Since the evolution of the aqualung in the mid-20th century, divers were quick to explore Malta’s coastal waters. First documented in an official government publication in 1959, the first recorded incident involved what was thought to be an unexploded bomb, but turned out to be a Graeco-Roman amphora. The fortuitous discovery of this amphora, opened the door to the creation of the Malta Underwater Archaeological Research Branch of the International Institute of Mediterranean Archaeology, launched on 30th January 1960, with an official deed being singed in June 1961.
