Abstract: Since the resolution taken by the European Commission in 2000 at Lisbon to increase by 15% the number of graduates in mathematics, science and technology (MS&T) by year 2010, economic indicators are showing that although the EU produces the highest number of such graduates and postgraduates and is the largest producer of scientific publications, investment in research is much less than that of its main competitors, namely the USA and Japan, and moreover that the gap is widening (EC, 2003). Universities have a crucial role to play and, in Europe, these centres of knowledge are not only producing MS&T graduates for the job market but also becoming increasingly involved in business collaboration with enterprises.
