Abstract: The book is a collection of five articles originally meant to appear in The Biblical Archaeologist. It consists of a short introduction by D. N. Freedman and D. F. Graf. Then follow the five articles: (I) 'The Amarna Period' by W. H. StiebingJr; (2) 'The Role of the Peasant in the Amarna Period' by J. M. Halligan; (3) 'Early Israel and the Canaanite Socio-economic system' by N. K. Gottwald; (4) 'Ancient Palestinian Peasant movements and the Formation of Pre monarchic Israel' by M. C. Chaney; and finally (5) 'Ancient Israel's Hyphenated History' by G. E. Mendenhall. Thereafter, the reader can make use of an author and subject index; while, at the end of each article there is an appropriate bibliography.
