Spirituality and disability are two complex and interconnected topics that have received increasing attention in recent years. Disability refers to a condition in which an individual has limitations in intellectual functioning, mobility, sensory or neurological processing which, in interaction with environmental and attitudinal barriers, may affect their daily life activities. Spirituality, on the other hand, refers to an individual's search for meaning, purpose, and connection to something greater than themselves. For many people with disabilities, spirituality plays as important a role in their lives as it does to non-disabled people. It can provide a sense of comfort, hope, and resilience during challenging times, as well as a source of connection to their communities and the world around them. Spirituality can also help individuals to cope with the emotional, psychological, and spiritual challenges that can accompany disability, such as feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety, especially when dealing with disabling barriers. This seminar will acknowledge that the intersection of spirituality and disability is a complex and evolving topic that requires ongoing attention and dialogue, particularly in reflecting about those spheres of human life in which we all find ourselves facing the same fundamental issues. At the same time, by acknowledging and supporting the spiritual needs of people with disabilities, we can help to promote their overall well-being and foster greater understanding and inclusion within our communities.
