Event: CineXjenza – Seaspiracy
Date: 26 April 2022
Time: 19:00
Venue: Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, Valletta
This month’s CineXjenza shall be dedicated to the Environment with special emphasis on Marine Conservation and Fishing. CineXjenza is a series of film events organised to encourage the practice of science among citizens. The screening of the conspiracy documentary Seaspiracy, takes us on a journey filled with criticism towards overfishing and accuses the sustainable seafood movement. After the screening discussion will follow with guest speakers Dr Alicia Bugeja Said and Prof Joseph A. Borg.
The marine environment is a crucial one as it is a food source (for example, fish), is used for irrigation, as well as being home to many species. Humans used and still use the sea nowadays quite extensively for a variety of reasons such as; tourism, energy and transport. Having said that, we still harm the marine environment by posing a number of threats. Seaspiracy is claimed at being a documentary about the worrying state of our seas, however, some suggest that it is riddled with oversimplification, inaccuracies and a troubling narrative.
Claiming that sustainable fishing is impossible, it suggests that the Dolphin Safe and Marine Stewardship Council labels probably do not give the assurance consumers expect. Opposingly, the fishing industry states that this is an “unacceptable and dishonest attack” as science studies are chosen according to biased sources. During the discussion with Dr Alicia Bugeja Said (fishing researcher) and Prof Joseph A Borg (Associate Professor with research interests in Marine Ecology at the University of Malta) we hope to debate whether the film is accurate enough. Is fishing completely bad? Or is the human race capable enough to undertake sustainable fishing? Join us to learn and provide your opinion on the matter. CineXjenza is supported by the STEAM project, run by the Malta Chamber of Scientists and S-Cubed, in collaboration with Spazju Kreattiv.
