Rev. Dr Paul Sciberras, Senior Lecturer and Head of the Department of Sacred Scripture, Hebrew and Greek within the Faculty of Theology, is the academic editor and reviser of the Fifth Edition of the translation of the Bible from the original languages – Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek – into Maltese. This translation is being published by the Malta Bible Society on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of its foundation. Rev. Dr Stefan Attard, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Senior Lecturer within the same Department, offered his assistance in this project.
This is the latest in a series of contributions of the Department of Sacred Scripture, Hebrew and Greek to the publication of the Bible in Maltese. Former members of the Department – notably, Mgr Professor Carmel Sant, Rev. Dr Donat Spiteri, OFM Cap., Rev. Fr Egidio Mizzi, OFM Conv., Rev. Professor Joseph Agius, OP, and Rev. Dr Anton Abela – were instrumental in the publication, since 1984, of previous editions.
The new edition was recently presented to the Maltese Episcopal Conference. Its publication was made possible with the help of the Archdiocese of Malta and the United Bible Societies, the world-wide ecumenical network of Christian Bible Societies operating in over 240 countries and territories to make sure that everyone has the possibility to access and engage with the Bible.
