The Department of Insurance and Risk Management in conjunction with the sponsors Mapfre Middlesea have organised a one-day conference at the Valletta Campus on Contemporary challenges in the Insurance Market.
The conference focussed on contemporary issues in the insurance market covering regulatory developments and challenges such as proportionality, IFRS 17 from a financial, and actuarial point of view and on how organisations need to be adaptable in order to keep up with the constant changing business environment.
The floor was opened by Professor Simon Grima Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management & Accountancy FEMA and Head of the Department of Insurance & Risk Management who introduced the moderator Professor Pierpaolo Marano from the same Department.
The Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy (FEMA), Dr Emanuel Said, addressed the sizeable audience, with some insights about what the faculty is doing to ensure we have the adequate workforce to address the coming challenges.
Mr Ray Schembri who is the Head of Insurance and Pensions Supervision at the Malta Financial Services Authority, Mr Gonzalo de Cadenas Santiago, who is the Executive Director of Mapfre Economics, Ms Marta Ostrowska who is a researcher in Reinsurance law and Secretary-General of the scientific project Principles of Reinsurance Contract Law at the University of Zurich and other renowned local speakers namely Mr Matthew Attard from KPMG Malta, Mr Chris Cardona from PwC Malta and Prof Pierpaolo Marano followed with their presentations and insights of the Insurance market challenges.
Following every three speakers we had a panel who took questions from the floor and from the moderator. These members consisted of Andre Farrugia, Matthew Bianchi, Josianne Briffa, Ray Schembri, James Mallia, Giselle Borg, Berta Toledo, Chris Cardona and Matthew Attard.
The conference came to an end with closing remarks from the Deputy Dean of FEMA and Head of Department of Insurance & Risk Management Professor Simon Grima.
