On 9 December 2024, the Department of International Law and the Malta Branch of the International Law Association, in collaboration with Ganado Advocates, hosted the conference 'Current Developments in International Law'. Held at the Aula Magna, University of Malta Valletta Campus, this half-day event brought together internationally renowned experts to explore contemporary issues shaping the international legal landscape.
The conference, opened by Pro-Rector Prof. Frank Bezzina, featured two insightful panel discussions. The topics addressed in the first panel related to international dispute settlement mechanisms. Prof. Christine Chinkin, highlighted the role of interim measures issued by the International Court of Justice in upholding international law. Prof. Maria Gavouneli, President of the International Law Association, delved into the role of international courts during crises, while Dr. Christopher Ward SC examined the complexities of diplomatic and sovereign immunities with particular reference to sovereign immunity in intra-EU arbitrations.
The second panel session covered pressing human rights and humanitarian issues. Madeleine Bridgett spotlighted the plight of women and girls in Afghanistan, examining international law's potential impact. Prof. Patricia Vella de Fremeaux and Dr Felicity G. Attard discussed the evolving legal duty to render assistance at sea while addressing potential gaps in the current legal framework.
The conference, which was moderated by Prof. Omar Grech, concluded with a Q&A session and remarks from Dr. André Zerafa, Managing Partner at Ganado Advocates. This event fostered engaging discussions, reflecting the adaptability of international law in addressing global challenges.
