Last March, COST.EU published a number of accepted proposals, one of which was CA19019 dedicated to the further understanding of Mediterranean cyclones (or Medicanes).
This Action, which was proposed by a consortium of meteorological researchers, including Dr Charles Galdies from the Institute of Earth Systems of the University of Malta, stems from the fact that there are still significant gaps on the full understanding of how cyclones can further modulate the Mediterranean region in face of a changing climate. A good number of scientific challenges are still unaddressed, requiring a coordinated approach.
This COST Action will coordinate the activities of researchers in meteorology, climatology and weather services in order to provide a deeper understanding of Mediterranean cyclones and on how to improve significantly the European capacity to predict their formation and impacts.
This COST will also aim at improving the interaction between academic researchers and professional weather services by promoting the efficient exploitation of fundamental research results and improve atmospheric models in a tangible way.
There are potentially large societal benefits from improving cyclone predictions anywhere in the world, especially in the Mediterranean where you find a drastic north-south divide when it comes to adaptation measures. Efficient networking between stakeholders, operational weather forecasters and researchers is timely and essential to address both challenges of research coordination and operational implementation of scientific results into weather and climate services.
