Project SANITAS – “Infectious Disease Prevention using Plasma-Activated Solutions”
A Scholarship funded by the COVD-19 R&D FUND 2020 of the Malta Council for Science & Technology
Applications are invited for two funded MSc by Research opportunities to work on the project entitled SANITAS financed by the Malta Council for Science & Technology through the COVD-19 R&D FUND 2020 in which the University of Malta is the sole partner.
The project is led by the Department of Food Sciences & Nutrition in collaboration with the Metamaterials Unit. SANITAS is a project that aims at assessing the feasibility of using plasma activated technologies as another means to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases.
This project would provide another technological means to further counter future disease outbreaks. Further information on the project may be obtained by contacting Professor Vasilis Valdramidis, Professor Ruben Gatt, Dr Sholeem Griffin and Dr Jefferson De Oliveira Mallia.
The ideal candidates should have a Bachelor degree in Biomedical Sciences with at least an Upper Second Class Honours. Due to the nature of the project, candidates who show evidence of a strong background in molecular biology, microbiology, and human physiology, although where necessary training will be given where specialised skills are required. Applicants should be eligible to be admitted to the MSc degree of this University in terms of the applicable bye-laws.
The selected candidates will be required to register for a M.Sc. by Research degree programme in Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Malta on a full-time basis, commencing not later than 1 October 2021.
These studies will be supported by a stipend of €500 per month for the first 9 months. Supervision of the MSc studies will be provided by academics from the Department of Food Sciences & Nutrition. The Scholarship will be subject to the eligibility of the candidates to enrol in the Master’s programme and the successful candidates will be expected to take up residence in Malta and attend the programme in person.
International applicants are required to present an internationally recognized English Language proficiency certificate at the required level. Further details are available online. International candidates will need to provide assurance that they have the funds available to cover their stay in Malta. The stipend awarded for this scholarship is to be considered as a form of allowance and will not cover all the costs attached to studying and living in Malta.
The degree has an annual enrolment fee of €400 for local/EU/EEA applicants and total tuition fees of €13,400 for non-EU/non-EEAA applicants. Tuition fee waivers of up to 100 per cent shall be awarded to deserving students. The fee waiver will apply for the normal duration of the programme being followed. If extensions of the period of study are required, these may not necessarily be eligible for a fee waiver. Only applicants who have been accepted unconditionally to read for the Master by research on a full-time basis are eligible to apply.
