The language of instruction at UM is English. If you have completed your secondary education overseas you are obliged to satisfy UM’s English language requirement by presenting a Secure English Language Test (SELT) result.

Applicants for all postgraduate courses (commencing in October 2014 or later) offered by the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, who are not in possession of a degree deemed comparable, in content and level, to the degrees required in Bye-Law 4, by the Faculty Admissions Committee, must present a SELT result with:
either a writing score of 7.5 (or higher) in the writing element and no less than 6.5 in any other element in IELTS,
or a writing score of 29 (or higher) in TOEFL (iBT).
Applicants may also present a Cambridge English Proficiency Advanced Certificate at Grade C (or higher).
TOEFL and IELTS score reports will only be valid if issued within 2 years from the date of commencement of the course at UM.
The test result must be obtained by:
30 September, for admission to courses commencing in October
31 August, for admission to limited number courses commencing in October
31 January, for admission to courses commencing in February
31 January, for admission to limited number courses commencing in February
If the test result is not submitted by these dates, applicants will not be admitted to the course even if all other entry requirements are satisfied.
Applicants for Master's courses by research are to submit the SELT pass before commencement of the course.
Applicants for the Ph.D. programme are to submit the SELT pass before commencement of studies.
