Launch of SeaBluE, a SEA-EU joint programme

Imagine spending each semester studying in a different country. Students can realise this through the European University of the Seas (SEA-EU) Alliance, which provides cooperative programs allowing them to live and study in several countries, gaining exposure to various cultures. After studying with diverse peers and applying their learning to real-world problems, graduates receive a European joint degree.

The European University of the Seas (SEA EU), with the support of the University of Malta as an associated partner, launched its first Joint Undergraduate Programme, the Bachelor in Sustainable Blue Economy (SeaBluE), on 10 September 2025. This programme is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to address critical global challenges such as marine pollution and climate change, and prepare them for roles in marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, and the wider blue economy.

Prof. Adam Gauci, who served as the local academic coordinator for the course, states “SeaBluE is more than just a degree. It’s a shared commitment to the Blue Economy to help shape the future of our oceans. At the University of Malta, we’re proud to be part of this European alliance, offering students the chance to learn, explore, and innovate across borders. This joint programme would not have been possible without the endless support of the SEA-EU office and the International Office at the University of Malta. Their constant guidance has kept our sails steady and our minds set on course.” Prof. Gauci reinforced the programme's value and thanked the University of Malta academics for their vital contribution, adding “I am deeply grateful to my colleagues from the Departments of Geosciences, Mathematics, Statistics & Operations Research, the Institute of Earth Systems, as well as the Departments of Banking & Finance, and Economics at the University of Malta. Dedicated academics from various faculties at the University of Malta will provide their expertise to students following this undergraduate course, ensuring they receive a rich and truly interdisciplinary education. With SeaBluE, we are equipping the next generation of stakeholders, policy makers, and scientists with the necessary tools to address marine challenges and drive sustainable innovation. We look beyond borders, disciplines, and traditions. This is education with a purpose.”

Specific events marked the exciting launch of these joint degrees and this European initiative. Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino underlined their value, stating that “The SEA-EU Alliance firmly believed in the impossible, so that the possible has become true. It is most satisfying to see the first cohort of students soon to start the 3 flagship joint degree programmes that benefit from the input of the expertise of all 9 universities of the Alliance. Our UM Rector, Prof. Vella, was correct in assiduously providing for such a key collaborative breakthrough within SEA-EU, giving a material substance to the Alliance and building the infrastructure for a SEA-EU Alumni community in due course.”

This ground-breaking program equips you to transform marine challenges into sustainable solutions, thanks to the commitment of the Joint Programmes Committee, University of Malta offices, and the SEA-EU Office. Your journey starts now.
