The Office for Human Resources Management & Development and the Office for Professional Academic Development, in collaboration with the Equity Office and the Counselling Services are organising the workshop: Recognising the signs of domestic violence.
This training session is open to all staff as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
Trainers: Dr Joan Camilleri (Head of Counselling Services Unit) and Ms Donatella Pace Olivari (Social Worker, Health and Wellness Centre)
Target audience: All members of staff
Duration of workshop: 3 hours
Delivery Method: Classroom-based
Date: Tuesday 25 November 2025
Time: 09:00 - 12:00
The workshop will address power and control dynamics in abusive relationships, which are central to victimisation. It will examine daily micro-aggressions, often masked as stereotypically 'normal' behaviour, and the local legal framework designed to address perpetrators. Attention will also be given to the different personality types of perpetrators, their communication styles, and how these contribute to identifying potential abusers.
This workshop will explore the psychological phases of victimisation, including how it can lead to mental health challenges such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and will also address why victims often struggle to adopt healthier, more assertive behaviours. The workshop will highlight how interventions from psychology, psychotherapy, and social work can address these issues.
All staff are encouraged to regularly consult the training schedule for information on forthcoming workshops and sessions.
