Late November 2025, Prof. Simone Borg from the Faculty of Laws was invited as a Distinguished Visiting Global Scholar at the Centre of International Law (CIL) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Prof. Borg was primarily invited to meet and exchange ideas with CIL researchers on areas of common interest and to provide feedback on CIL’s research agenda, in particular on issues relating to Law of the Sea and Climate Change.
She also met with CIL researchers, advising them on research projects due to her expertise on ocean governance law particularly related to conservation of marine living resources and the impacts of climate change upon ocean governance and the Law of the Sea.
During her visit, Prof. Borg participated in Singapore’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Law of the Sea Course, which CIL organizes every year, where she presented the Oceans-Climate nexus impact on the Law of the Sea and ocean governance to the participants. The course hosts high level officers from various States who wish to further their training and legal knowledge on the Law of the Sea.
During her visit, Prof. Borg also participated in the CIL-Norwegian Council for the Law of the Sea Dialogue, where she moderated a session entitled: “Black Carbon and the Heavy Fuel Oil Ban: Pathways to Cleaner Arctic Shipping”. She was also a panellist on the Roundtable Discussion on the Implications of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement (BBNJ) for the Arctic.
During her visit Prof. Borg also met a legal team from the Singapore State Advocate Office as well as Ambassador Prof. Tommy Koh, a Professor of International law and diplomatic negotiator of International repute, who held innumerable prestigious positions amongst which he was President of the third United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, 1980-82.
