The Certificate in Foundation Studies in Tourism Studies will provide you with the knowledge, personal and inter-personal skills and organisational framework upon which to build your future undergraduate Tourism studies. The primary aim of the course is to provide you with the knowledge base, transferable skills, communicative skills, and general competence to allow you to progress successfully onto the University of Malta’s undergraduate Tourism Studies course. The course offers specific training in those core Tourism and Academic English areas where you will require further assistance and development. The course will provide teaching in the subject areas of history, cultural heritage, tourism, hospitality, psychology, communications, economics, accounting, business mathematics, statistics, basic research skills, reasoning, as well as academic English skills. Successful completion of this course will guarantee you a place on the undergraduate degree programme for Tourism studies.

The Course shall be open to all applicants who:

(a) present a secondary and/or high school certificate issued abroad and who studied within an educational system that is not comparable to the Maltese educational system (in terms of curriculum, years of study, etc.) and

(b) are in possession of one of the following qualifications in English at the required level:

(i) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-Based Test (iBT) with an overall score of 61, and a minimum score of 17 in the reading and writing components or
(ii) International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with an overall band score of 5.5, with a reading and writing score of at least 5.0 or
(iii) Cambridge First Certificate at grade C or better or
(iv) any other equivalent qualification approved by the Admissions Board and

(c) are in possession of qualifications allowing access to an undergraduate course in the selected discipline in the country where such qualifications originate, but

(d) are deemed to require further study to be admitted to undergraduate degree courses at the University of Malta.

At the discretion of the Board, applicants shall be required to pass an interview and/or a written test.

Applicants who are deemed ineligible to join the Course may be allowed by the Board to enrol as students in the Foundation Commencement Programme which is detailed in Appendix I to the regulations for the Course.

EU, non-EU and Maltese dual citizens who previously studied abroad and then join higher secondary schools in Malta for more than one year shall not be admitted to the Course.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.

The course will provide you with:

• a sound knowledge of the basics of the disciplines of tourism, hospitality, humanities, social sciences, business and statistics;

• the reading, writing, listening, and critical thinking skills necessary to function effectively as a Tourism student in higher education;

• training to apply scientific reasoning and analytical skills as well as training on low and high order thinking skills;

• an understanding of how to think and reason more effectively in the abstract as well as to solve problems efficiently;

• an understanding of the main features of research methods and their application.

If you have completed your secondary and/or high school education abroad within an educational system that is comparable to the Maltese educational system, and are interested in entering a career in the tourism industry, then this is the ideal compensatory and introductory course for you.
As a certificate holder, you will be eligible to apply for B.A. (Hons) Tourism Studies at the University of Malta.
