Abstract: This paper attempts to lay down the state of the art of prehistoric studies of the Maltese islands, by focusing attention on the most salient issues in current debate. The problem of the earliest settlement in Malta has been reopened, mostly on the theoretical level; but the alleged existence of epipalaeolithic traces of human activity needs verifying.
