The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society join forces with the University of Malta's Institute of Digital Games, and they cohost a full-day workshop on the trends, methods and threads of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Intelligence (CI).
A number of esteemed IEEE Officials, IEEE Journal Editors in Chief, IEEE Fellows, and academics from Malta and around the globe will meet at the UM Valletta Campus to explore cutting-edge topics and share insights that are shaping the future of AI and CI. This captivating event promises to be a cornerstone for both AI scholars and enthusiasts, aiming to unravel the intricacies of AI and CI, exploring their evolution and applications across diverse domains.

The event will start with a warm welcome by Prof. Simon Fabri, the Pro-Rector of Research at the University of Malta.

- IEEE CIS President and Distinguished Professor Jim Keller is set to kickstart the event with his talk on "Von Neumann, Turing, and ChatGPT: Some perspectives on the evolution of AI/CI." He will delve into the historical roots of AI and its progression, offering a unique perspective on the field.
- Georgios N. Yannakakis will share his personal journey and insights in his talk, "Survival Strategies for AI Academics - A Personal Journey through the AI and Games Field."
- Pablo Estevez’ talk will focus on deep attention-based models that are revolutionising fields like astronomy and medical research with his presentation, "Deep Attention-Based Models (Transformers): Applications to Astronomy and Medicine.
- Sanaz Mostaghim will uncover the future of optimisation techniques and the interplay between optimisation and decision-making ("Next Generation of Multi-Objective Evolutionary Optimisation and Decision-Making Algorithms").
- Pau-Choo (Julia) Chung—in her presentation, "When AI Meets with Digital Pathology,"—will explore the intersection of AI and digital pathology, showcasing how AI is transforming the analysis of pathology images, a pivotal development in healthcare.
- Yaochu Jin’s talk will focus on graph neural networks and their application in solving combinatorial optimisation problems ("Graph neural networks for combinatorial optimisation.").
- KC Tan will then present innovative methodologies for knowledge transfer in solving complex optimisation problems ("Recent Advances in Evolutionary Transfer Optimisation and Applications.").
- Jialin Liu will explore the role of evolutionary computation in procedural game content generation ("Procedural Level Generation via Evolution and Learning.").
- Xin Yao’s talk ("When Evolutionary Computation Meets Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence,") will focus on the critical issue of trustworthiness in AI applications and innovative solutions for ensuring the reliability and integrity of AI systems.
- Gianluca Valentino will outline how AI is reshaping our understanding of Earth ("AI4EO: The use of Artificial Intelligence in Earth Observation applications.")
- Matthew Montebello will provide a comprehensive overview of AI research in Malta.
- Konstantinos Makantasis will delve into the challenges of affect modelling beyond statistical learning in his presentation titled “Affect modelling beyond the realm of statistical learning”.
