Prof. Sandra C. Buttigieg invited to speak at European Patient Safety Conference 2025

Rethinking patient safety: evolving roles and responsibilities in a changing healthcare landscape

Prof. Sandra C. Buttigieg, Head of the Department of Health Systems Management and Leadership at the University of Malta and Consultant at Mater Dei Hospital, participated as a panel speaker at the European Patient Safety Conference (EUPSC) 2025, held in Munich, Germany.

Prof. Buttigieg took part in the interactive session “The Risks and Potential of Data-Driven Healthcare,” which brought together international experts to discuss how artificial intelligence, digital health, and electronic health records are transforming patient safety.

In her contribution titled “Embedding Ethical Data Use into Organisational Safety Culture,” Prof. Buttigieg highlighted the importance of moving beyond compliance towards a culture of ethical reflexivity in the use of health data and AI. She emphasised the need for leadership, education, and patient partnership to ensure that data-driven innovation supports safe, transparent, and equitable care.

The conference, organised by the European Patient Safety Foundation (EUPSF), gathered healthcare leaders, policymakers, and researchers from across Europe to explore new strategies for proactive, system-level patient safety.
