The Postgraduate Certificate course in the Teaching of Ethics in Schools provides an overview of different ethical theories and the developmental stages of moral development, as well as the main theories of curriculum development. The course explores some issues such as the political and ethical complexities of pedagogical relations in the ethics class, and the relationship between morality and spirituality. It also delves into the methodologies for the teaching of Ethics in schools and the best methods for assessing the knowledge, skills and dispositions related to the subject. The course extends over a period of one year of part-time studies. Lectures are held in the evening, normally spread over two days a week. Some of these lectures may be delivered online.

Requirement for award of Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Ethics in Schools: 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Ethics in Schools, under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate awareness of the main theories of curriculum development and the key issues in the teaching of Ethics.
  • Describe the Philosophy for Children approach and the methodologies associated with it.
  • Compare the different types of assessment and identify the best methods for assessing the knowledge, skills and dispositions related to the subject.
  • Acquire knowledge of the different political thoughts about democracy and democratic conversations.
  • Understand their relevance to teachers responsible for sustaining fruitful pedagogical relations.
  • Acquire specific knowledge of the way conversations can develop within the ethics class.

This postgraduate course is a requirement if you are interested in teaching Ethics in schools. The DQSE and the Ministry of Education are currently introducing a programme of Ethics education for students who are currently opting out of Religious Education will be gradually rolled out in primary and secondary schools.
