The University of Malta (UM) offers a highly structured yet flexible framework for micro-credentials short, accredited courses designed to fit into your life.
With very few exceptions, almost all study-units from our standard degree programmes are available to be taken as standalone short courses. Best of all, you can study entirely at your own pace. If you choose units labeled as PLAS, your credits can be accumulated over time to earn larger qualifications, including certificates, diplomas, or even full degrees!
The micro-credentials at UM are tailored to your unique professional and personal goals. It is broadly split into two main routes:
Our most popular route for broad lifelong learning. PLAS micro-credentials cover an incredibly vast and eclectic range of subjects, allowing you to learn for the joy of it or to diversify your skillset.
Structure: Typically worth 4 ECTS credits, consisting of weekly evening lectures (usually 18:00 to 20:00) spread over 14 weeks. Perfect for working professionals!
Ultimate Flexibility: There is no fixed track. You have total freedom to mix and match subjects based entirely on your personal interests.
Sample Modules: Diverse topics ranging from The Chemistry of Fireworks and Beekeeping to the Psychology of Communication and Maltese Bobbin Lace.
Faculties, Institutes, Centres, and Schools at UM accept students to register and attend study-units from their programmes together with full-time and part-time students at the University of Malta. UM is a full-fledged university; hence, the amount of possibilities is very broad. As a word of advice, start by narrowing your interests according to streams:
Science base – These are micro-credentials offered mainly, but not only, by the Faculty of Science, Faculty of ICT, and Faculty of Engineering, among other centres and institutes, with a focus on science-based areas.
Social Sciences base – An ever-growing stream with micro-credentials offered mainly by the Faculty for Social Wellbeing, Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences, and Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy amongst others.
Business base – A very popular stream for micro-credentials which are well-aligned with the industry. The Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy offers most of these micro-credentials to both interested participants from the industry and also to people who have a special interest in business-related topics.
Health – The Faculty of Health Sciences champions this area of micro-credential offerings, available for anyone with an inclination or interest in health-related areas.
Humanities – A stream focusing on culture, history, language, and human expression. These micro-credentials are primarily offered by the Faculty of Arts, n, and various cultural centres and institutes at UM, making them ideal for anyone looking to deepen their critical thinking or explore global and local heritage.
