Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a first cycle degree with at least Second Class (Honours), in a discipline related to fine arts, visual arts, architecture or conservation or any other area as deemed relevant by the Board, with a minimum of 180 ECTS credits, obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course or
  2. a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in paragraph (a), provided that applicants may be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research, via an extended interview and the submission of appropriate documentation.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they provide sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

Preparatory Programme

Applicants may be required to complete a preparatory programme comprising not less than 30 and not more than 60 ECTS credits as directed by the Board, particularly when they wish to focus on an area of research different from that followed in the first cycle degree but do not possess the skills or the knowledge to take up postgraduate studies in that area. Applicants shall be required to obtain an overall average mark of 65% or better in the preparatory programme prior to their registration as regular students on the Course.

Applications for our February and October intakes have been officially open since the third week in November. You can submit your application online. The deadlines for submission of applications vary according to the intake and courses. We encourage all international applicants to submit their applications as soon as possible. The Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts is a by-research programme that invites you to conduct project-based research. It is an M.A. geared towards individual development, where you will be expected to carry out studio-based and practice-based portfolios, as well as a written dissertation on a subject of your choosing in the field of visual arts. You will be encouraged to participate in seminars and to demonstrate your communication skills in presenting your projects and creative designs. The M.A. will prepare you for a lifetime of art-making under the guidance of experts in the field as you learn to also appreciate the significance of cultural artefacts.

The course shall be offered in areas of study in Built Environment where the Faculty can offer expert guidance and supervision. Applicants interested in pursuing a Master of Fine Arts by Research are to consult with staff members before submitting their application and research proposal.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2025-26.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Fine Arts - M.F.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Prepare a professional portfolio of your visual arts projects
  • Write at length about creative projects and case studies in the fields of culture and visual arts
  • Demonstrate communicate skills when presenting projects and creative designs
  • Learn how to make professional use of a studio
  • Conduct independent research and apply theory and practice to high quality creations

As a holder of the M.A. of Fine Arts in Visual Arts, you will be employable, both locally and abroad, as an architect, archivist, art editor/gallery director/consultant, curator, cinematographer, cartoonist, illustrator, exhibit designer, painter, critic, fashion designer and teacher. If you would like to further your studies to a doctorate level, postgraduate opportunities are offered by the University of Malta and by foreign institutions abroad.
