This course is intended to provide an advanced level of education, training and research if you are a graduate in Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Surgery and any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies. The course enables you to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. Students will be required to find a local supervisor and submit a research proposal upon applying in order for the application to be referred for consideration. This Master of Science Course, which is mainly by Research, will allow you to specialize in your chosen area of studies. The core subjects of the course are Research Methodology and Research Seminars. The Seminars ensure that you are aware of the research in the biomedical area within the University of Malta and other collaborating institutes.
The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:
(a) the degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery, or
(b) the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery, or
(c) the degree of Master of Dental Surgery awarded from July 2018 onwards, or
(d) the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) with at least Second Class (Honours), or
(e) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Pharmaceutical Science) with a classification of Second Class Honours or better, or
(f) the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the Faculty of Science, with at least Second Class (Honours), or
(g) at least a Second Class (Honours) degree in a discipline related to health science, or
(h) a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) to (f) above.
Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme as specified below.
The preparatory programme shall comprise study-units to which not less than 30 and not more than 60 credits shall be assigned.
Students shall be required to successfully complete the Preparatory Programme of study with an average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration in the Course.
Preparatory programmes of study shall also be governed by the Principal Regulations.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Identify and select appropriate source material including data from primary sources. • Analyse, reflect upon, critique and evaluate the information and data collected. • Communicate effectively as an important part of scientific endeavour. • Present your own research results and ideas largely through example (by attending seminars). • Conduct research in the medical field and the methods employed to apply and obtain funding through your awareness of the need of international collaboration. • Analyse and present results through the proper methodology to carry out successful research.
The course is intended if you are a Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Health Science or Science graduate. If you are an interested applicant, then it is important to seek advice from your respective faculty.
The course is intended if you are an employee, or are seeking to become an employee, with Life Science companies targeting the development of new drugs to treat various disorders. This course is also intended if you work with pharmaceutical companies, hospital laboratories, health ministry and ministry for social policy.
Potential to continue studies at Ph.D. level at University is also available if you are a successful graduate.
