A Bachelor degree from this University, or another higher education institution recognized by Senate for the purpose, with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study related to a health care profession (such as medical, nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy).

Applicants not in possession of a first degree in the health care professions but who have other qualifications in Traditional Chinese Medicine of a level acceptable to the University Admissions Board and sufficient to qualify for registration as Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners (or acupuncturists) with the national registering body (Council for Professions Complementary to Medicine or equivalent EU body) shall also be considered.

This course is intended to provide an advanced level of education, training and research if you are a graduate in Traditional Chinese Medicine and any other area of study deemed relevant by the Board of Studies. The course enables you to acquire advanced knowledge and research skills that could be employed in the academic and clinical setting. You will be assigned a local supervisor, and if necessary an external co-supervisor, to enable you to draw up a research proposal and undertake the research project.

This Master of Science Course, which is mainly by Research, will allow you to specialize in your chosen area of studies. The core subjects of the course are Research Methodology and Research Seminars. The Seminars ensure that you are aware of the research in the biomedical area within the University of Malta and other collaborating institutes.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 and continue up to the end of Summer Semester of academic year 2025-26.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Science in Integrative Medical Systems - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Centre for Traditional Chinese Medicine.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Acquire the background knowledge related to developing a research proposal.
  • Critically appraise published scientific literature.
  • Discuss research finding in the light of current knowledge
  • Effectively accessing and applying information technology to research.
  • Formulate and apply a research proposal in the field of TCM.
  • Analyse the data and experimental proposal provided.

  • Explain the routine literature sources of commonly available
  • Analyse the uses of the different literature appraisal tools
  • Identify areas in a particular topic where further research is necessary
  • Analyse the role of different types and uses of the different research methods
  • Explain the basic principles of research ethics including consent and respect for autonomy
  • Analyse the essentials about professional responsibility and good clinical practices in research
  • Discuss the fundamental principles of qualitative and quantitative research

  • Store and retrieve information
  • Be familiar with techniques of research process
  • Research the literature and conduct a literature review
  • Appraise the published research and formulate a research question.
