The closing date for receipt of applications from applicants in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause' is 31 August 2024 at 2pm.

Applicants may also be required to submit a Learning Portfolio. Further information about the Portfolio will be forwarded to applicants.

Applicants wishing to join the part-time mode must submit their application as full-time, and then include a note in the comments box of the application form, denoting their preference to be considered for the part-time option. Such requests will be considered by the Board of the Faculty.

In this programme of study, the 'Classics' is used as an umbrella term that will take you back to Ancient Greece, where you will academically familiarise yourself with the mythology, society, literature and linguistics, history and art of the Greek Islands. During your course of studies you will be able to have a basic understanding of the Greek and Latin languages and read key texts in their respective original languages. You will be able to understand the influence that this ancient world has had on our contemporary one, while also enriching your cultural and historic mindset by participating in interdisciplinary action. You are also encouraged to participate in the Erasmus+ mobility period, for a multicultural and diversified learning experience.


Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (Near Eastern Studies)

The programme of study in Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (Near Eastern Studies) will provide you with an academic perspective on the oriental studies of near Eastern culture. During the course we will broaden your Semitic literary and linguistic horizons through a wide historic spectrum, ranging from Judaism, Hebrew, Islam and Arabic cultures. By instilling a deeper understanding of the history, society and culture of the near Eastern world, you will become more knowledgeable and appreciative of their unique and respective history, along with their traditional literature and language. We also encourage you to participate in our Erasmus+ mobility programme for a more holistic and multicultural academic experience.


Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Classics

By the end of the course, you will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate proficient lexical and grammatical knowledge of the Greek and Latin languages.
  • Be competent in reading and interpreting classical texts and appreciate certain unique qualities of the original classical literature untranslated.
  • Show an understanding and appreciation towards classical civilization in its historical, literary and cultural contexts.
  • Show competency in composing critical and analytical essays or papers regarding the subject matter.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary discussions and link the importance of Classical studies with modern society and relevant fields.

Middle Eastern and Asian Languages and Cultures (Near Eastern Studies)

Upon successfully completing this programme of study, you will be able to:

  • Conduct critical academic research based on the subject matter through your acquired and refined faculty for critical thought.
  • Contribute your invaluable knowledge on your understanding of near Eastern literature and culture to discussions of an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary nature.
  • Have a basic or intermediate understanding of near Eastern Semitic languages in the oral, written and auditory mediums of their respective languages.
  • Understand the contribution of Near Eastern Arabic countries and their current stance in contemporary affairs.

Careers, both locally and abroad, can be as an archivist, barrister, editorial assistant, heritage manager, museum or gallery curator, market researcher, Higher education lecturer and media.
