Information for International applicants

Applicants admitted as "Adult Learners" under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must be in possession of passes in English and Maltese proficiency tests as approved by the Faculty. Applicants will be exempted from sitting for the proficiency tests in English and Maltese if they are in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 5 or higher, or at Intermediate Matriculation Level pass at Grade C or higher in the respective subject. In the case of English, passes at the same standard in comparable qualifications will also be accepted. Applicants who do not fulfil the Maltese Language Proficiency requirement by the beginning of the Course, may be allowed to enrol in the Course, provided that they obtain a pass in Maltese Language Proficiency before the end of the first semester of the Course, and prior to sitting for any assessment.

All applicants must have native or advanced speaker competence in a third language other than Maltese or English.

All applicants shall be required to satisfy the Board, through an interview, that they have reached the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

All applicants shall be required to submit with their application a letter written in English giving their motivation for applying for the Course, together with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae.

All applicants must prove that they have resided in Malta for a minimum of three (3) years prior to the commencement of the Course.

Cultural mediation will facilitate you with the establishment of good communication and mutual understanding between different cultures, promoting and enhancing access to local services provided in a number of specific areas of intervention such as reception, health, education and employment. You will be exercised by trained and experienced professionals who are able to promote and not hinder its scope, preparing you to become a professional in facilitating the relations between migrants and citizens in the host country, aiming at the mutual exchange of knowledge and the establishment of positive relations between individuals of different cultural backgrounds and ethnic origins. The course aims at promoting awareness and to sensitize all parties involved in otherness issues. In developing and delivering the course, the Department for Inclusion and Access to Learning collaborates with other academics and professional practitioners in order to develop and offer the best programme of study possible.

The Diploma in Education for Cultural Mediation course will train you to become a professional capable of facilitating the relations between migrants and citizens in the host country, aiming at the mutual exchange of knowledge and the establishment of positive relations between individuals of different cultural backgrounds and ethnic origins. The course aims at promoting awareness and to sensitize all parties involved in otherness issues.

The Diploma in Education for Cultural Mediation is being offered for the first time in October 2021 by the Department of Inclusion and Access to Learning within the Faculty of Education. Teaching and learning within this programme takes place in line with the Department's mission of promoting inclusion and inclusive practices and pedagogies within the community. In developing and delivering the course, the Department for Inclusion and Access to Learning collaborates with other academics and professional practitioners in order to develop and offer the best programme of study possible. Academics and practitioners in the field of education, inclusion, migration rights, communication and language theory, translation and interpreting, accompaniment, conflict resolution and others, have been engaged from both within and outside the department to develop and deliver the course.

Requirement for award of Diploma in Education for Cultural Mediation: 60 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Diploma in Education for Cultural Mediation under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • assume and assert your role as cultural mediators while interacting with clients, without intruding into other professional fields
  • apply effectively principles and techniques of trust development, facilitation of communication, conflict resolution and promotion of collaboration between professionals and migrants, in your everyday work
  • be aware of your tasks, what they involve, and how they are differentiated according to the intervention field
  • comprehend how to assess the level of trust, collaboration and mutual understanding in a triadic encounter, and adjust your behaviour accordingly
  • become acquainted with different ways of reviewing, analysing and reflecting on encounters, in order to improve your performance.
