The proliferation of research areas within the long-established art and design disciplines coupled with the application of new technologies and scientific innovation are deeply changing the way we express ourselves and communicate. Cross-platform practices have established themselves as new fields of research made possible through the exciting convergence of disciplines in Art and Design with technology. The Diploma in Design Foundation Studies encourages innovation and experimentation, while providing students with the creative, artistic, historical and academic foundation upon which they can build their responsible contributions to their respective field.
Providing an extensive education in art, design and digital media practice, history, theory and criticism, the course fosters a critical and creative exploration of traditional and emerging forms of visual communication practices which cut across physical and digital environments.
The core values and objectives of the Diploma are encapsulated in the teaching of both the fundamental and what are regarded as the generic elements of art, design and media art practice, namely artistic skills, research methodologies and the evaluation of emerging developments in digital imaging and their application within artistic contexts. These core values enrich and expand the student's personal visual language and contribute in a diagnostic context towards helping students prepare themselves for specialist study at higher levels.
The philosophy of the course is derived from a belief that an individual's creative development is his/her primary concern and that this is best served by the cultivation of an imaginative and thoughtful engagement with the practical and theoretical aspects of art, design and media practices. Implicit to this is the conviction that by providing a period of time and space dedicated to creative practice as part of a community of developing art, design and media students and lecturing faculty, the individual can be enlightened and acquire an understanding of the breadth and range of traditions, ideologies and modern-day thought which shape our diverse visual culture.
The Design Foundation Studies course is divided into two parts, a 30-credit Certificate programme held over the first semester, and a further second-semester 30-credit programme which would qualify candidates for a Diploma.
Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

The basic objective of the course is to assist students to develop visual literacy and visual communication skills, and to learn visual design fundamentals. Important secondary objectives will be to encourage students:
• to develop their language communication skills (oral and written English) • to develop their cognitive skills (thinking and learning skills) • to develop their human communication skills (self-confidence, awareness, interpersonal relations, team-work) • to introduce students to a limited number of ‘knowledge-based’ skills specific or complementary to the art and design practices the students wish to specialize in.
The Course is conceived primarily as a preparatory programme for degree courses offered by the Faculty of the Built Environment and other degree courses for which a level of visual literacy and an ability to handle two- and three-dimensional representation, is required. Candidates aspiring to follow such degree programmes are generally required to have an aptitude for visual communication, to have graphic and language communication skills, to have an appreciation of the role of technology in innovation and design, and to have a sound scientific preparation to allow understanding of materials, their interaction, and how they may be manipulated. The course is intended to receive candidates from different educational backgrounds and ensure that all develop the minimum required for the respective degree courses they intend to follow.
