This course is aimed at students who already have advanced proficiency in Maltese Sign Language (il-Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija, LSM). You will use your existing knowledge of the language to build an awareness of linguistic features of LSM, comparing this to other signed and spoken languages. You will learn about different contexts of work, and how methods and styles might work with different learners, as well as the use of assessment and feedback at different stages of the learning process. Building skills as a reflective practitioner, you will consider both student feedback and your own experiences in teaching and learning. Assessments and instruction will be via Sign Language.

Applicants admitted as “Adult Learners” under paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations must satisfy the Board that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit.

All applicants shall:

demonstrate that they have advanced proficiency in Maltese Sign Language as evidenced through supporting documents and reference letters; and
pass an admission interview conducted by an interviewing board.

Requirement for award of Diploma in Applied Linguistics for Maltese Sign Language (LSM): 60 credits

This programme of study is governed by The General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws of the Diploma in Applied Linguistics for Maltese Sign Language (LSM) under the auspices of the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology.

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

Define and discuss linguistic theory applied to teaching LSM;
Describe theories of teaching and learning in a range of environments;
Understand and produce academic texts in LSM;
Design appropriate teaching and assessment materials for a range of contexts;
Apply reflective skills to practical teaching and learning situations;
Evaluate and apply theory and knowledge to the local context.
