| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will focus on the meaning and the reason for training and developing adults. It will specifically tackle the various aspects of training and development, namely the training needs analysis, including the objectives and outcomes of such analysis and the implementation of an employee training and development programme. In general, the unit will be covering the components of a successful employee learning experience and the employee training and development process goals and plans. Successes and failures of training and development will also be dealt with, as well as the importance of the operating environment in which the training and development takes place. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to expose participants to the procedures required to identify what type of training is required in different adult learning organizational settings. It also targets knowledge and skills related to reviewing job descriptions to develop successful professional development programmes in the spheres of adult education, training and development. This will be accomplished by targeting knowledge and skills related to assessing training gaps when comparing the goals and tasks undertaken by the individuals and the existing development activities available in particular organizational setups. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain what is meant by the terms Training and Development; and - Describe the various training methods that can be undertaken, ranging from the customary lecture-based teaching to more sophisticated approaches, depending on the individuals and the type of training and development required in the organisation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Compute a systematic plan for a training needs analysis; - Formulate a staff training profile; - Prepare a training development plan; - Analyze the training effectiveness; and - Prepare the most suitable and cost-effective approach, focusing especially on the system approach to training.
