DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with an introduction to the theory, tools, and terminology of investments from a finance point of view together with their application. Through a number of exercises and case studies, students will be able to put into practice the knowledge acquired and understand how to use the various analytical tools in a work-related environment. This study-unit covers portfolio theory and practice, asset-pricing and equilibrium in capital markets, fixed-income securities, security analysis, and applied portfolio management.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit has the following four aims:
1. students will get exposed to the theory, tools, and terminology used in financial investments, in particular portfolio theory;
2. students will get first hand experience of how the body of theory and tools are used to take investment decisions in practice;
3. students will also get exposed to the various analytical tools used in a work-related environment;
4. students will be in a position to: know how to use portfolio theory in practice to achieve optimal risk-return combinations; know how to price assets in capital markets; know how to price fixed-income securities; and know how to analyse securities and determine their valuation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit participants will learn:

- to use various techniques to price shares, bonds and other types of financial assets;
- to analyse and determine the factors that trigger changes in asset prices;
- how to calculate returns and risk-adjusted returns on various type of investments;
- how to understand basic trading and investment strategies and which investment strategy to follow based on a number of constraint factors imposed on the investment manager.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- decide on the best investments given a number of constraints in terms of risk aversion, risk tolerance, risk-return combinations, investment horizon.
