| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit looks at the development of the Hospitaller fortifications in the Maltese Islands in order to outline how military architecture developed during the Baroque age. Students will also gain an insight into how the various schools of military architecture contributed towards this development and how different materials and construction techniques were employed in the construction of fortifications. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit seeks to bring forward the importance of fortification and military architecture in the age of the Baroque. The lectures are designed to introduce the students to: a. the Development of the art and science of military architecture from the 16th to the 18th centuries, this including: i. the principles of attack and defence ii. the development of fortifications iii. fortification-building methods and techniques b. the Bastioned fortress and its influence on the development of urban culture in the Baroque Age. c. the role of the Baroque fortress in siege warfare and defensive strategy. d. the Aesthetics of military architecture and the representation of the Baroque fortress in art. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify a work of fortifications; - Relate works of fortifications to the various schools of military architecture; - Distinguish between the materials and building techniques used in fortress construction. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Appreciate military architecture; - Recognize and interpret elements of fortification from different periods.
