| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is suitable for students who have successfully completed the study-unit of Communicating in Chinese 1, or who have the equivalent knowledge of this study-unit. It is meant to be complementary to Basic Elements of Chinese Language 3. It will focus on training the students' oral skills through selected real-life situations and topics. The study-unit will continue to review the phonetic system of Pinyin, and impart additional conversational skills and oral sentence patterns. Study-unit Aims: - To grasp the vocabulary learnt in CHN2101 through listening and by being able to use effectively the various tones of the Chinese language; - To read the sentences and texts learnt in CHN2101 with correct pronunciation and tones; - To communicate long and complicated sentences using the vocabulary learnt; - To express oneself in more detail and to have more complex conversations with native speakers; - To give longer presentations using correct Chinese grammar and sentence structures; - To understand further Chinese customs and to communicate with native Chinese speakers in a culturally appropriate way. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Master the vocabulary and texts learnt in CHN2101; - Grasp information from longer presentations and more complex dialogues; - Use correctly the Chinese grammar and sentence structures learnt in CHN2101; - Understand more complex Chinese customs and to discuss further aspects of Chinese culture. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be: - Able to understand better people from different cultural backgrounds; - Able to appreciate the skill and art of conversation; - Able to contribute to a more harmonious world by seriously taking into consideration the viewpoint of others; - Better prepared to undertake the study of other languages.
