DEPARTMENT Classics and Archaeology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit surveys classical epic in general, and one of the two Homeric Epics in particular. After the introductory lectures on the history of the Homeric Question, and the literary and archeological evidences supporting the origin and historicity of the epics, sessions will consist in a close reading and commenting of either Iliad or Odyssey. Concurrently, students will work on a creative project (individually or in a group) on a subject of their choice inspired by an aspect of the studied epic.

Aims:

This unit aims to provide students with:
1. A comprehensive knowledge of the narrative of the major ancient epics, primarily Iliad and Odyssey;
2. An in-depth knowledge of one of the two epics;
3. An appreciation of the epics' timelessness, their power to appeal, and their continual significance to modern-day issues;
4. An awareness of the oral tradition and the rise and development of the Homeric Question;
5. An understanding of the persisting influence of the epics in modern art-forms in the light of classical reception studies.

Outcomes:

1. To explain the basic plotline of the two epics;
2. To analyze major episodes and key characters of the epic under review;
3. To report on the history of the reception of the Homeric epics and the significance of the Homeric Question;
4. By means of a creative project, to demonstrate ability to relate with the epic under review in an engaging and fulfilling way.
