DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the study of human behaviour in organisational settings while highlighting gender issues in this regard. It focuses on several salient aspects of the field while emphasising the gender dimension across the topics. The unit explores career choice and recruitment as the first steps into organisational life. It considers how training and group dynamics lead to employee socialisation and development.

The contributions of leadership and individual and group performance to organisational productivity are discussed. The unit also introduces students to the concepts of organisational culture and change.

Study-Unit Aims:

Organisational behaviour is a multidisciplinary field that examines how people interact in organisations and contribute to organisational success. The unit applies occupational psychology human resources principles for the understanding of how individuals behave in organisations and how their performance can be improved for the benefit of the organisations and their own careers. It aims to familiarise students with some basic theories and practices in organisational behaviour while paying particular attention to gender issues.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- define organisational behavior and analyse its current trends;
- identify individual and gender differences in organisational behaviour;
- identify the key attributes that are relevant for performance;
- define career choice and development with a focus on gender differences;
- interpret the ways in which groups develop and behave in organisations;
- compare different leadership theories.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- explain the recruitment process and highlight potential gender issues;
- describe the main steps in job analysis and person specification;
- distinguish various approaches to performance appraisal;
- explain basic training models;
- summarise the main steps in organizational change.
