| DESCRIPTION | Study-Unit Objectives: To guide participants through the principles of effective occupational health practices, with particular reference to specific places of work and the role of different health professionals in this area. To enable participants to appreciate the extent, diversity and impact of substance abuse. To consider the suitability and efficacy of prevention and/or control strategies, policies and measures. To guide participants to appreciate the role of occupational hygiene within OHS. A: Themes for Occupational Health - The doctor, nurse, safety officer and employee in industry - Collaboration towards recognition of hazards to health. - Shift work and health. - Sickness Absence - work incapacity, impairment and disability. - Worker health in various specific industries. - The self-employed worker. - Occupational hearing loss. - Musculo-skeletal Disorders. - Eyes, nose, skin, neurological and behavioural disorders / conditions. - Functional capacity. - Disability. - Common eye complaints and injuries. - Physical hazards. - Occupational infections. - Health Surveillance. - Relevant Legislation and regulation pertaining to Occupational Health. Key Study Assignments: (i) Health Hazards in a selected Industry; (ii) Disability and the home; (iii) Shift Work; (iv) Sickness Absence. B: Themes for Occupational Hygiene - Definition, scope and basic principles of occupational hygiene. Recognition, evaluation and control. Obligations under legislation and regulation. - The role of the Occupational Hygienist in relation to other OHS professionals: safety officer; enforcement inspector; nurse; company physician. - Occupational Hygiene flowcharts for aerosols (dusts, mists, fumes). Gas vapour - biological hazards. Substances of major workplace concern. - Occupational exposure limits and standards. - An overview of monitoring equipment, use, limitations and practical demonstration. - Relevant Legislation and regulation pertaining to Occupational Hygiene.
