DESCRIPTION This study-unit builds student awareness of the different types of organisations in contemporary society. It critically reviews limited liability companies, small family business, cooperatives, social enterprises and the informal economy, amongst others. Through case studies, students discuss the strengths and weaknesses of particular organisational designs and evaluate the role and dynamics of human resources within such organisations.

With the help of case studies, the unit explores the underlying principles and policies that affect the way in which specific types of organisations act and strive to achieve their aims.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to:
- enables students to widen their knowledge about the various designs and scopes for which organisations are set up.
- investigates how particular organisations operate, the way decisions are taken and how such organisations react to their environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- discuss the basic similarities and differences in an array of organisational setups;
- appraise (through theoretical and experiential methods) the functioning of such organisations as micro-enterprises, cooperatives, social enterprises and the informal economy;
- evaluate the role and dynamics of human resources within each type of organisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- identify the strengths and weaknesses of particular organisational designs;
- specify the important aspects to be examined in order to choose the most effective organisational design according to the aims;
- understand the advantages and disadvantages of specific organisational forms in specific operating contexts.
