| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give an overview of restorative justice, the theories and key principles that have inspired the restorative justice movement. Concepts such as victim-offender-mediation, circles and conferences will be explored. The rationale of restorative justice mediation will be critically examined, together with the legal structure underpinning restorative justice principles in Malta. The students will also be made aware of the various types of offenders and the victims that they could meet and the problematic that each typology poses. Study-unit Aims: (a) To make students aware of restorative justice principles. (b) To familiarise students with the various typologies of offenders (c) To familiarise students with victims of crimes Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) describe the restorative justice process. (b) demonstrate the ability to assess when victim-offender mediation is appropriate. (c) calculate risks in victims and offenders mediation. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: (a) work with both victims and offenders. (b) conduct victim-offender mediation sessions.
