DESCRIPTION The study-unit will build on the Illustration course of the first year and broadly concentrate on storytelling, text to image translation and their communication to specific markets, deepening students’ knowledge and skills. The study-unit will also focus on ways of manipulating the reader’s view and grabbing his/her attention. Students will be required to present work that is technically refined and that is directed to specific target markets. The study-unit will direct students to finding and establishing their personal style and will train students to work across both traditional as well as digital media.

Study-unit Aims:

- To deepen students’ knowledge and skills in visual storytelling;
- To enhance students’ awareness to particular target markets and address illustration work accordingly;
- To channel students to find their own personal style;
- To foster a culture of critical, self-reflection and peer evaluation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- be familiar with the various illustration target markets, such as those of the graphic novel, book illustration, and online illustration, and know how to create work that addresses their needs technically as well as conceptually;
- be familiar with techniques of directing the viewer to follow the narrative, both in a linear as well as non-linear fashion;
- be used to illustration methods through contextual and historical research.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- deepen his/her market knowledge and enhance his/her technical skills;
- create strategies to direct the reader’s view and grab his/her attention;
- work across media and find a personal style.
