- Food and Nutrition Policy- Maltese and international
- Dietary guidelines- Maltese and international
- Aspects of nutrition and dietary assessment
- The role of Diet in the prevention and control of heart disease
- Lifecyle nutrition- elderly, childhood and diet in pregnancy
- The role of Diet in the prevention and control of diabetes.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide nursing students with a basic knowledge of nutrition and its scientific principles, particularly in areas related to community and clinical nursing.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Have a basic knowledge of the nutrition principles relating to dietary assessment;
- Have a basic knowledge of the nutrition principles relating to nutrition assessment including anthropometric techniques and standard nutrition assessment questionnaires;
- Understand the key principles of dietary related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease;
- Have an understanding of the current health of the Maltese nation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out basic dietary assessments;
- Understand and execute basic nutrition assessments in the community/clinical setting;
- Develop key skills in researching and providing basic evidence based nutrition advice in their role as nurses.
