DESCRIPTION | English Literature and Music I The integration of English Literature with specialized comparative studies in Music. The following will be reviewed: Rhythm as found in nature as the basis of speech, song, etc. Poetry of the Middle Ages (Beowulf). Plainsong, Tropes, the Lais (Lay). Influence of Troubadour Music and poetry on Minstrelsy in England. The pioneering work of Ruteboeuf leading to the first important examples of the clear separation of music and word. Italian influences on English Literature and Music (Boccacio and the poets of the “dolce stil nuovo”, the madrigals of Landini) Chaucer (Troilus, Parliament of Fowles and The Canterbury Tales). 15th Century England starts to take the lead (Dunstable). The carol. The Franciscan influence (contrafacta). The Elizabethan Madrigal. The dramatic function of song in Shakespearean Tragedy. English Literature and Music II The Globe Theatre (1598-1599). The Masque (Milton, Lawes). Metaphysics – John Donne; the ethical madrigal. Richard Lovelace (composer/poet). Satire (Pope, Fielding, Defoe and John Gay with his Beggar’s Opera”. The Enlightenment – the age of the Dictionary in both the literary and musical fields. The Dawn of Romanticism – Wordsworth, Coleridge and John Field. Robert Burns and the Scottish Ballad. The Burletta, Ballet. Sir Walter Scott in the line of Burns. Musical criticism (Newman, Shaw, Lambert). Influence of English Literature on “native” composers.
