| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit deals with several aspects of the German language in an increasingly diverse, dynamic and international job market; it seeks to tackle and train specific language skills for different industries and professions such as German language use in business, in engineering and in the social sector as well as language use in law. Participants of this study-unit will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of terminology related to the different fields of expertise, learn how to compose a written job application and participate in a job interview; furthermore, they will amplify their knowledge of how to communicate in speaking and writing in a professional context as for example in meetings and in electronic communication. The study-unit will also provide practice in advanced academic and argumentative writing in German, for example paraphrasing (academic) texts, writing introductions and conclusions, linking and structuring paragraphs, formulating theses and constructing differentiated arguments. Topics can be adapted to students’ interests and needs. Diese Studieneinheit beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten der deutschen Sprache im Kontext eines zunehmend dynamischen und internationalen Arbeitsmarkts; sie thematisiert sprachliche Fertigkeiten sowie den Fachwortschatz verschiedener professioneller Bereiche wie zum Beispiel in der Wirtschaft, in technischen und sozialen Berufen sowie im Rechtswesen. Ziel des Kurses ist es, den Wortschatz der Teilnehmer/innen zu erweitern. Sie lernen, Bewerbungsunterlagen für den deutschen Arbeitsmarkt zu verfassen sowie ein Bewerbungsgespräch zu führen. Darüber hinaus erwerben sie Kenntnisse in professioneller schriftlicher und mündlicher Kommunikation wie zum Beispiel für die Teilnahme an Besprechungen und das Schreiben von Emails. Die Studieneinheit bietet zusätzlich Übungen in wissenschaftlichem und argumentierendem Schreiben für Fortgeschrittene, zum Beispiel dem Paraphrasieren von (wissenschaftlichen) Texten, Einleitung und Schluss schreiben, Absätze verbinden und strukturieren, Thesen formulieren und differenziert argumentieren. Die Themen können den Interessen und Bedürfnissen der Studierenden angepasst werden. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to increase the participants' knowledge of German vocabulary related to different professions, to further develop their written and oral communication skills for a professional context as well as to enhance their academic and argumentative writing skills. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - follow professional meetings held in German; - understand German words related to different professions; - understand and read (electronic) communication in a professional context; 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - participate and engage in work meetings held in German; - write a job application in German; - attend and engage in a job interview in German; - write emails in German in a professional context; - apply new vocabulary to a specific work context; - use more professional written German; - formulate theses and arguments in German more proficiently.
