TITLE L'Italiano Cantando

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Italian

DESCRIPTION Famous Italian songs will be heard and their text analyzed in the lexical and morpho-syntactic aspects as well as from the sociolinguistic point of view. Grammatical exercises based on or modelled on Lidia Costamagna’s Cantare l’italiano. Students will thus be getting the opportunity to exercise their language skills, through the discussion of the finer points of grammar and lexical choices and to write their impressions and comments on the lyrical content and the stylistic devices used by songwriters such as De André, Guccini, Battisti, Tenco, Gaber, De Gregori and Dalla.

Students will also be given the opportunity to contribute by presenting materials of their choice, to elaborate on related ideas and to exchange differing viewpoints.

Discussions of this kind will help students to improve both their oral and their written expression.

Study-unit Aims

To develop the students’ language skills and also their power of analysis, and thus further their knowledge about social trends in different periods of 20th century Italy, as reflected in the carefully-chosen songs that will be discussed.
