DESCRIPTION Organisations are nowadays aware that Information is created, received, managed and stored in predominantly electronic format. Electronic records are a vital resource for organisations without which they cannot function. Records managers must hone their skills and keep abreast of technological advancement and current records management best-practice to ensure that records are managed professionally and enable organisations to function efficiently and effectively. This study unit will deal with all aspects relating to electronic information and records and how their management can be incorporated into the information fabric of an organisation.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to familiarise students with: a) the issues and challenges faced by records managers in the management of electronic records; b) the skills and techniques required of records managers in the electronic environment to ensure professional recordkeeping.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define what constitutes electronic records and some of the challenges they pose for organisations today; - identify the vital importance of records management to organisations today, and ways to convey such importance to senior management;
- name the main driving forces for electronic records management;
- recognise the key components of a successful electronic records management programme;
- identify the main issues that may arise as an organisation implements electronic records management, and strategies to address such issues.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify the landscape within which modern organisations operate and the processes involved;
- articulate current theoretical approaches to the management of electronic information and records;
- name the challenges faced by records managers;
- communicate the value of information literacy;
- apply a high level of information retrieval and reflective capability.
