| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is concerned with entrepreneurship and small new business practice. It focuses on the key elements of creating and developing an enterprise. The study-unit is grounded in the understanding that business success derives from the generation of creative ideas, effective management, and personal attitude. The following subject areas are covered: the nature of small business ventures, the context of entrepreneurship, the characteristics, attributes and resources of entrepreneurs, the identification of opportunities and their development into new sustainable ventures. Students will gain practical experience, and apply the various concepts and models covered, by developing a new business venture project of their choice. Study-unit Aims: - To introduce the students to the concept of entrepreneurship and the new small business venture creation process; - To provide an understanding of the necessary resources and capabilities required to underpin venture development and growth; - To develop an understanding of the strengths and limitations in the context of venture creation and growth. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Understand the the linkages between entrepreneurship and venture creation, development and growth; - Understand the contrasting motivations which entrepreneurs have for creating new ventures; - Recognize the stages and processes involved in identifying and screening entrepreneurial opportunities. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explore, and appraise different business situations where entrepreneurial opportunities are present or possible; - Assess the resources required to pursue an opportunity; - Evaluate critically the rationale underlying new venture success.
