DESCRIPTION In this study-unit students are introduced to specific issues related to the learning and teaching of Number & Algebra at Secondary level. The following topics are considered: Beginning Algebra, the four rules, large numbers, fractions & decimals, negative numbers, mental work and estimation, proportional reasoning & negative numbers. Students will be helped to understand better the difficulties encountered by secondary school pupils in these topics. Different learning goals and learning activities in these topics that are suitable for the classroom will also be considered. Emphasis will be placed on tasks likely to promote discovery, problem solving, reasoning, making connections between mathematical topics, and providing opportunities for all students to learn.
