| DESCRIPTION | The aim of the study-unit is to introduce the students to basic exercise physiology in order to enable them to understand the scientific principles and methodologies involved in Fitness Training, and designing a training programme for the specific needs of the students or athletes. It will include the following areas: - Introduction to basic biology - Basic and Applied Exercise Physiology - Physiological changes in response to exercise and training - Assessment of Physical Performance - Application of Sports Science in training programmes - The importance of exercise for Health and Fitness - Exercise prescription for Health and Fitness Learning outcomes: By the end of this study-unit students will be able to: - Answer questions related to the structure and functions of the cardiovascular, respiratory, neuromuscular and metabolic systems as related to exercise; - Demonstrate and apply the knowledge of Exercise physiology and bioenergetics into the context of sport and exercise; - Explain the effects of exercise on physical well-being and health; - Conduct simple performance assessments; - Apply the physiological principles learnt to design basic exercise and training programs.
